5th Grade Class Completes D.A.R.E. Graduation

Hailey Agnew - Staff Reporter, The Headlight

This past fall Mrs. Becker and her fifth grade students participated in the D.A.R.E program for the fourth year at Canistota. D.A.R.E. stands for define, assess, respond, and evaluate. The purpose is to teach students healthy ways to handle stress, positive communication skills, and how to deal with peer pressure.

This year’s instructor was Deputy Anna Misar; she not only instructed Canistota’s group of fifth graders, but she also instructed Salem, Salem St. Mary, Bridgewater-Emery, and Montrose students as well.

“There will be challenging things in life, and the D.A.R.E. program has showed me ways to handle these different situations. I am glad I was given the opportunity to be a part of this program,” said Keira Esser.

All of the participants were required to write an essay explaining what they learned throughout the duration of the program. After the students from all five schools turned in their essays a winner was chosen. This year the essay winner was Canistota’s own, Bailey Spicer. Since she won first place, Spicer was given the opportunity to present her speech in front of all other D.A.R.E. program graduates and their families. Spicer received a medal and a stuffed lion (mascot of D.A.R.E.) as her prize.

Congratulations to Bailey Spicer and all other fifth grade students for completing D.A.R.E. graduation. This is another example of how the communities can work together on preparing students for the future.
